System Operations Engineer I–IV
Help Power the Reliability of Georgia's Electric Grid
Georgia System Operations Corporation (GSOC) is seeking a System Operations Engineer to support the reliable, safe, and efficient operation of Georgia's electric generation and transmission systems.
This role sits at the core of real-time system operations, partnering closely with our Energy Control Center (ECC) and System Control Center (SCC) to ensure grid stability, optimize system performance, and maintain compliance with NERC reliability standards.
This opportunity is ideal for an engineer who enjoys working at the intersection of engineering analysis, real-time operations, and system modeling, and who takes pride in supporting critical infrastructure that impacts millions of people across the state.
Candidates with deeper experience, advanced technical expertise, and the ability to lead initiatives or mentor others may be considered for higher-level engineer classifications (Engineer II, III, or IV).
What You'll Do
As a System Operations Engineer, you will play a key role in supporting GSOC's system operations by providing engineering analysis, operational support, and technical expertise that ensures reliability across the electric grid.
You will:
- Provide day-ahead and real-time engineering support to ECC and SCC operations
- Analyze system conditions using load flow models, forecasting tools, and operational data
- Develop, maintain, and enhance operational applications, models, and analytical tools
- Support outage coordination, system switching, and reliability planning activities
- Ensure compliance with NERC reliability standards and operating requirements
- Partner with operations, planning, and engineering teams to troubleshoot issues and improve system performance
- Develop and maintain policies, procedures, and operational guidelines that support safe and efficient operations
At advanced levels, this role may also:
- Lead complex modeling, system analysis, and cross-functional initiatives
- Serve as a technical subject matter expert in system operations and reliability
- Provide mentorship, guidance, and knowledge sharing across the engineering team
- Drive continuous improvement efforts focused on system performance, tools, and processes
What You Bring
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering or a related field
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools (Excel, Power BI, Word, PowerPoint)
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
Technical Skills:
- Energy Management Systems (EMS), SCADA, or AGC platforms
- Load flow analysis and system modeling tools
- Generation unit commitment and economic dispatch models
- Short-term load or renewable (e.g., solar) forecasting
- OATI interchange scheduling software
- Outage management systems
- Programming or scripting (e.g., Python, VBA)
- Data historians and databases (e.g., PI, eDNA)
- Familiarity with power plant operations and transmission switching
Leveling Overview
- Engineer I – Entry-level; supports analysis, tools, and monitoring with guidance
- Engineer II – Independent contributor; performs analysis, troubleshooting, and support activities
- Engineer III – Advanced contributor; leads initiatives and complex system analysis
- Engineer IV – Subject matter expert; drives strategy, mentors others, and leads system improvements
